Nature Photography - Autumn/Fall

Nature Photography - Autumn/Fall

Saturday 28 September
North Sierra - 10am - 2 Hours
James French
Join this special fall session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture fall season and nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

James French
We will be using natural water reflections and seeking out man-made reflective surfaces in the area to explore how we can use reflections to add depth and intrigue to our images. Reflections can help us to show our subject from an unusual, or from multiple, points of view. We can use reflections to abstract our subject or to make perfect mirror images. We'll even have a look at how we can create our own reflections when there are none around.

September 2024: A large wildfire, known as the Davis Wildfire, is burning on the southwest side of Reno, Nevada. I previously took several daytime photos capturing the fire above Washoe Lake and the wild mustangs in the area. This time, I returned to photograph the burning mountains at night. Despite the tragic nature of the wildfire, I was able to capture its dramatic beauty under the night sky, with the reflection of the orange glow in the lake and the Milky Way visible to the south of the fir

The Great Reno Balloon Race was this weekend. About a dozen balloon are up and aglow before dawn. This beautiful one was my favorite. Most shooting were using auto white balance, cloudy, or 5600K to keep the yellow cast from the flame. I prefer a white balance which retains the true colors of the balloons, especially for this balloon.

Location: Upper Glen Alpine Falls. I hiked to this location after sunset. The foreground is a single photo I took during the blue hour for clarity and sharpness. I couldn't wait for the Milky Way at this location due to high bear activity it was almost dark by the time I hiked back to the car. The Milky Way picture is a stack of 19 frames for noise reduction, taken a few hours later over Lake Tahoe, which is just a few miles away from the falls.Edited in Luminar Neo.

This photo was taken with a Sony A7III camera and a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens .the settings: iso125 / 70mm / f3.5 1/250sDate: 09/11/2024One of the reasons why I took this photo is because photography is something that apassionates me, playing around on editing photos like this is something I truly loves. How your mind could play along with your imagination at the moment your setting your figures looking for the best angle to create art and could transmit an emotion through a photo.

On this dewy, fresh morning something compelled me to grab my camera and take a picture as sandhill cranes strolling gracefully through the front yard. Harriet pictured here is, as always, accompanied by Ozzie and their offspring of the season. They have been welcomed morning coffee mates for the last 12 years. The picture captures the calm presence and the dancer's restlessness of these beautiful visitors.

This shot was taken on my first day into this trip. My wife and I decided to spend Labor Day weekend in the mountains which was wonderful but also very busy which isn't the best for wildlife photography. However, I did come away with some good shots from my outing (mostly landscape) and this is by far one of my favorite. I love how the light is striking the deer's face while he is mostly shrouded in shadow. I took this with a Nikon 200-500mm @ 500, 1/160s, ISO 100 and f6.3. I shot this across th
